There’s something almost magical about the hush that descends over your kindergarten classroom when you hand out coloring sheets. Even your busiest student will find a quiet space to focus their concentration. To harness this power, you need to make your coloring pages have as many small objects as possible so that students are constantly taking pen off the paper and evaluating their color choices. These alphabet beginning sound coloring pages have a variety of objects that begin with the letter shown tucked away. This means that as your students work on these free abc coloring sheets, you get some excellent fine motor skills practice as well as discussions about beginning sounds in common words.

Teaching Beginning Sounds

These alphabet letters coloring pages provide a great bridge in your kindergarten year between being able to write and name all 26 letters, and being able to hear the specific sounds that they make in spoken words. The best place to start with this process is listening out for sounds at the start of words, as these tend to have more concrete spelling rules than middle and ending sounds (with the exception of starting digraphs). These alphabet beginning sound coloring pages show common objects that begin with the letter that your students will be able to name (if not spell!). Students will be able to say the name of the object out loud and hear the similar starting sound for each object. This will help make the connection between the letter shape and the sound it makes.

Playing Games WIth Alphabet Letters Coloring Pages

Even with the highest levels of concentration, it won’t take long for your students to color in each of the objects on these free abc coloring sheets. You can easily turn these pages in a beautiful, personalized bulletin board display, or send them home for proud parents to put on display. For some more fun with alphabet beginning sound coloring pages in your classroom, try some of these activities:

  • Match with real objects – for this activity, you’ll need to find miniature versions of the objects that begin with the letter shown on the color page. These can be toys, or miniature erasers. In either case, give students a bowl of objects and ask them to find all the objects that begin with a specific letter as quickly as possible.

  • Play bingo – a great way to help students learn their beginning sounds with these alphabet letters coloring pages is to give each student a few letter pages and then call out objects that appear on those pages. Students find the matching picture and cover it up with a marker or a token and try to match the objects on their page first.

  • Classroom scavenger hunt – it’s always a good idea to bring movement into your learning centers, and a scavenger hunt around your classroom is a great tool to get your students up and about while also thinking about their learning. In this game, give each student one of the alphabet beginning sound coloring pages and have them scoot around the room trying to find objects that begin with the letter. Make them say the names of the objects out loud to make sure they’ve got the correct starting sound!
