This Cars Subitizing to 10 packet will help students practice tally marks counting 1-10, matching ten frames to numbers and matching finger counting 1-10 to number. These printable subitizing games all follow the same format so it’s easy for your students to master.
Kindergarten students are always fascinated by any sort of moving machine, but cars hold a special place in their hearts. Maybe it’s because nearly all of them have one or more in their family, maybe they love the sound that fast cars make, or maybe that toy cars are just really fun to push around your classroom. Whatever the reason, you’ll always get better engagement in your math centers when you can bring cars into the mix, and these car themed printable subitizing games are a great way to motivate students to master their counting skills.
What Is Subitizing?
Subitizing is a key skill for counting large objects in kindergarten. Essentially, it’s the ability to look at a group of objects and automatically know how many items there are in the group. It’s the skill that allows people to look at the traditional arrangement of dots on a dice and know what number is represented without having to count them out each time. It’s an important skill to master for your students as they will need it for addition and subtraction practice in the coming grades.
Preparing Your Printable Subitizing Games
These printable subitizing games are simple to prepare: just download, print either the ten frames, tally marks or fingers (or the whole set if you’re looking to play the matching game) and you’re ready to go. It’s a good idea to print 4 or even 6 to a page to save on ink if you’re making a class set, and laminating them will help them last all year long.

Extension Tasks For Subitizing Clip Cards
These cars subitizing to 10 clip cards make for great practice, as they allow your students to practice matching ten frames to number, as well as developing the skill to practice tally marks counting 1 – 10. They also show students typical subitizing arrangements that help them match finger counting 1-10 to number. No matter which skill is being worked on, students look at the number of objects in the middle of the card (dots on a ten frame, tally marks or fingers) and mark the car that shows the correct number. As they begin to master these printable subitizing games, try some of these extension activities:
-
Match the numbers – a great way to help students make links between different sets of objects that represent the same number is to give them the entire set of 30 cards and have them create groups of the same number (e.g. find the ten frame, tally marks and fingers that all represent “5”).
-
Create other sets – as with any kindergarten math skill, students learn best when they are allowed to manipulate the world around them. Once they master these visual subitizing, ask them to create sets of real-world objects for a partner to count.
-
Write the number – finally, you can edit the cards by removing the car choices from around the edge, and provide your students with a blank car to write the number represented. This would make for an excellent assessment opportunity as well as more practice in number formation.
