Whether we like it or not, our students are going to grow up in a world where they will need to be global citizens; able to understand different viewpoints and traditions as part of being able to make trades, deals and compromises with their colleagues all over the world. This work needs to start as early as possible with exposure to different cultures and ideas right there in your kindergarten classroom, which makes these Chinese New Year Count and Color Worksheets a great way to celebrate the lunar new year on the other side of the world.

This Chinese New Year Count and Color packet is a great way to combine cultural appreciation with math skills, as students will count sets of different objects that are typically associated with the Lunar New Year such as lanterns and dragons. Grab your counting worksheets for kindergarten today!

Using Counting Worksheets For Kindergarten

Your kindergarten students have to leave your classroom being able to accurately count a group of objects. This skill is also known as one to one correspondence, and it’s the strategy where a student will touch an object and say the correct counting word in order. This Chinese New Year count and color packet is a great way to combine cultural appreciation with math skills, as students will count sets of different objects that are typically associated with the Chinese New Year such as lanterns and dragons. You can use these Chinese New Year games for kids as a way to discuss what the objects are, how they are used in Chinese New Year celebrations and how they compare and contrast to our own celebrations.

Extension Kindergarten Activities for Chinese New Year

As your students practice, they’ll quickly master these counting worksheets for kindergarten. This is helped by the self-checking nature of the cards, where students can mark the correct answer and then look on the back to make sure they’ve got it right. To extend their learning, try some of these activities:

  • Remove the answers – the first challenge for these Chinese New Year count and color is to remove the 3 options from the bottom of each card. This removes the possibility of students just guessing each answer and forces them to practice their number formation skills at the same time. If you print off spare copies, you could cut out each Chinese New Year item and create your own counting worksheets for kindergarten using the same concepts and pictures.

  • Error analysis – when you’re teaching math to younger grades, error analysis is a great way to show students common mistakes that they’re making without making them feel like you’re criticizing their performance. For these Chinese New Year activities for kindergarten, simply give them one of the pages where you’ve completed the worksheet already with some of the answers being incorrect. Your students then need to find the ones that are correct, and fix the ones that are wrong.

  • Create comparative sentences – for those students who show early mastery of one to one correspondence counting, you can move them towards comparative number sentences. To do this, give them different pieces of the  Chinese New Year count and color worksheet and ask them to complete sentences with the words “more” or “less”. For example, “there are ____ lanterns than fireworks”. After a few rounds led by you, you can can challenge them to create their own comparative sentences.
