There’s something very sweet about Valentine’s Day in your kindergarten classroom. It’s one of the few grade levels where the day is less about romance and love, and more about friendship and getting on with each other. Expect students to bring in small favors and gifts for each other, all complete with cheesy compliments. You can tap into this spirit of friendship with this free Valentine’s Day Roll and Cover Number, which comes with its own printable dice for your students to decorate and use.
Building Number Recognition in Kindergarten
Kindergarten math is full of essential skills that your students need to master before they move on to first grade. Key among these standards is the ability to recognize numbers up to 20 instantly. As with all key kindergarten skills, repetition is key, and the key to keeping your students motivated during repetition drills is to make it fun. This Valentine roll and cover printable game is a sure fire way of engaging your students in a fun independent math center with a big heart.

Extension Roll And Cover Number Activities
The premise behind these free printable dice games for kindergarten is simple. Either using the 1 – 6 or 2 – 12 playing cards, students either roll the dice or pick a card from the provided deck, and cover up all instances of that card. Players can work either independently or with a partner to see how quickly they can cover up all the Valentine’s Day love heart numbers. To get more out of this free Valentine’s Day math activity for kindergarten, try some of these roll and cover number extension activities:
-
Keep a tally chart – you can combine this number recognition game with some data handling and recording by turning it into a tally chart exercise. Students can still roll the dice and cover up the Valentine’s Day love heart on the board, but you can then ask them to add a tally to a recording sheet. They’ll be able to see which numbers are most popular (this works especially well when you play this activity with 2 dice) and you’ll be able to teach them how to use tally marks to keep track of larger numbers. If you’re working on tally marks with your class, you can also check out this post.
-
Create addition sentences – another key skill that your students need to master in kindergarten is the ability to add single digit numbers together in their head. Any dice rolling game is perfect for this as your students will generate multiple sets of single digit numbers to add together. In this Valentine roll and cover printable, you can show your students how to lay out a simple addition sentence as they roll both dice and add together the numbers to work out which heart to cover up.
-
Create your own game cards – finally, this free Valentine’s Day math activity for kindergarten has the potential for unlimited replay value. Simply cut out the hearts on one of the playing sheets, make some copies and you can create endless roll and cover number playing cards for your students to practice their number recognition skills all month long.
