Sunflowers make for an excellent transition project for your preschoolers. You’ll start by talking about seeds and what plants need to grow in the spring, and have students put the seeds in the ground and take care of them. When they return to your classroom in the fall, the sunflowers should be big and tall and ready to use. You can do some counting of the petals, drawings of the plants and even try eating some of the seeds. Once they’ve finished growing, you can bring sunflowers into your classroom with this alphabet stamping sheet to help your students with practicing letter recognition.

Effective Preschool Alphabet Activities

One of your primary tasks to get your preschoolers ready for kindergarten is to help them learn the letters of the alphabet, both in upper and lowercase. As with all key skills with this age group, repetition is key, as is finding multiple ways for them to practice themselves. Flashcards and letter hunts are good tools for helping them to find different forms of the same letter, and this sunflower alphabet letter stamping page gives them the opportunity to accurately make the letters that they see without having to worry about pencil grip or correct letter formation.

Ways To Use Sunflower Alphabet Stamping Sheet

These simple preschool alphabet activities are easy to use straight off the printer. Just make sure you have a full set of upper and lowercase alphabet stamps, and your students can find the sunflower alphabet cards and then stamp the matching letter onto their  letter stamping page. Once they’ve got the basic concept of the alphabet stamping sheet, try some of these extra activities to push their learning further:

  • Say the name – practicing letter recognition is all about connecting printed letters to the sounds that they make. Encourage your students to say the name and the sound that each letter makes in your phonics program before they stamp it on the page. This will help them develop the connections necessary for early writing and reading as well as giving them permission to be noisy (sort of!) in your classroom.

  • Work with a buddy – the easy way to use this alphabet stamping sheet is to hide the cards around the room or in your sand tray and have students find them. Up the challenge by having your students work with a partner. Give one person a blank letter stamping page and the other person a filled in page. The person with the filled in page then says the letters that they see in front of them, and the challenge is for both players to end up with an identical set of sunflower alphabet letters.

  • Reverse the game – you can change up the game for a center by giving students an already completed alphabet stamping sheet and have them take turns to turn over the sunflower alphabet cards to find the right matches. The first player to find all the matches (or matches in a straight line, like BINGO) wins. Make sure you’ve printed off multiple copies of the letter cards so all students have the chance to win.
