Social-emotional activities help young children understand their own feelings and learn how to express these feelings in a healthy manner. This particular game also allows preschoolers to work on visual discrimination and fine motor skills. It’s a great activity for preschool centers and quiet independent playtime.

Set It Up
For this activity you will need:
Paper
Printer
Scissors
Clothespins or wooden pegs
Optional but recommended: laminator
Below are the supplies I use personally at home. After doing so many printable activities, I’ve found that it’s most helpful to always have these basic supplies on hand.

Start It Up
Print out the sheets you need. Cut out the individual clipcards and laminate them if you wish. Set out the clothespins or wooden pegs for your child to mark the matching emotion from the given choices.
You could try asking the child to name the expressions shown. This increases vocabulary therefore encouraging the child to use these words to describe what they are feeling instead of feeling misunderstood and throwing a tantrum when the time comes.

You can also pair this activity with some books about feelings like Bear Feels Scared – This is a nice friendship book that showcases how even big mighty bears can sometimes feel scared and what they can do to feel safe again.
The Pout Pout Fish – This would be a great social-emotional component to an ocean leaning unit. Lots of repetition and cute drawings that young kids love so much.
