Prepping these tally mark clip cards is a fairly quick and simple task.
Just print out the sheets, laminate them to keep them sturdy and cut them into individual cards. Laminating ensures durability, will save you from having to print them often and keeps them from getting bent under the weight of the clothespins. Set up your Valentines math center with a bowl of clothespins and you’re ready so start subitizing!

Printable Valentine Number Sense Activity

As a mom of 2 trying to find fun ways to help her kids understand number sense, I’ve had to do some research into the world of early years education. Along the way, I’ve learned a few interesting new words and ‘subitize’ is one of them. Subitize basically means being able to identify a number when represented in a different way. This might be in tally marks, dominoes, dice, finger counting, etc.

These Valentines tally mark cards can also be used to encourage your students to count by fives once you get to the bigger numbers. In fact, they’ll have to switch between counting by fives and then counting on by ones, making it even more of s challenge! For example, 18 would be “5,10,15…16,17,18.”

To make the cards self-correcting, you could mark the correct answers with a dot or sticker on the back. This way, your little one just needs to flip it over and you can have some time to do other things. They will love that extra independence!
