There’s so much to love about Easter in the preschool classroom. Even if you’re a non-secular school, your students will be excited for the Easter bunny and the candies that they bring. It also marks the beginning of the growing season and your students will be thinking and talking about the vegetables and flowers that they’re planting at home. Both of these make for great themes for your academic centers, and this bunny carrot match up game is a great way to talk about counting and colors.
Teaching Strategies For Counting
Counting a group of objects accurately is one of the key skills that you need to help your students to master before they enter grade school. While the key is repetition, as with any essential preschool skills, you can help them by finding different ways for their brains to make the connections. This Easter color matching activity for preschool has a cute bunny and carrot counting puzzle which acts as a self correcting math center as the bunny piece of the puzzle will only match to the correct number of carrots. This strategy of presenting students with both the question and the answer is a great tool for teaching math as it reduces anxiety over getting the correct answer and removes any guesswork.

Teaching With Bunny Carrot Match Up
This Easter color matching activity for preschool comes with two fun activities. The first is a bunny and carrot counting puzzle where students have to count the carrots and match it to the bunny with the correct number on its belly. The second is a bunny carrot match up activity where students have to match the color of carrots to the correct bunny. Some possible teaching strategies for this bunny carrot match up activity are:
-
Make a prediction – you can help students take a step towards additive subitizing (where they instantly recognize the correct number of objects without the need to count) by having them look at one of the carrot cards and predict how many there are by selecting the appropriate bunny card. The very nature of the bunny and carrot counting puzzle means that they will quickly be able to check if their answer is right or not.
-
Make it real life – while it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to bring a real life bunny into your classroom, you can definitely buy a few bags of baby carrots for your students to collect and count. You could even make your own healthy version of an Easter hunt by turning it into a real life bunny and carrot counting activity.
-
Make their own puzzles – one final way to use this Easter color matching activity for preschool is to have students make their own version. It could be that they choose a bunny carrot match up theme, or they could pick chocolate eggs and baskets, or flowers and garden beds. No matter what theme they pick, they can use different cutting patterns to make their Easter puzzle a self-checking exercise for a friend to work on.
